Southern Luzon Iron Sharpens Iron Meeting
SAN
PABLO CITY, Philippines -- "The favor of God on us is the most important
aspect of our ministry." Those words capture the opening message given by
Dr. Rey Taniajura to some 25 church leaders and workers gathered in
San Pablo City for the Southern Luzon Iron Sharpens Iron Meeting Oct. 12-13.
Eleven out of the 13 churches in the area were represented in the
meeting. Among other things, participants worked on the area and local church
budgets, discussed the vision and mission for the area, and spent
substantial time in prayer. Rey Salayon was proclaimed assistant
pastor of the Daet church and Boni Gonzales was formally assigned as pastor
of the Sta. Teresita congregation, a church composed of the Cimmaron Aeta tribe
with whom Mr. Gonzales was working since last year. Onie Galit of Mindoro church
will move to Mindanao for his missionary training; his sending church is the
Batangas City church. --Arlan Aquino
Bomb Explosion in Kidapawan City
There were at least 8 casualties and 25 injured in a bomb explosion last October 10 in the city of Kidapawan. The said bomb exploded at the Weena bus terminal at 2:45 pm. A month ago, a bomb was also planted inside an air-conditioned bus of the said company. It exploded but thankfully, there were no casualties.
Dr.
Reynard R. Gapul, an elder of the church here has a brother-in-law, Mr. Gerry
Austria, who works at the terminal as a bus dispatcher, he has attended worship
services with his family at few times before. His life was spared because the
bomb exploded when he was no longer on duty. The recent bomb explosion occurred
near his ticketing booth. Dr. Gapul's clinic was 50 meters away from the
bombsite and due to the strong explosion, a stone was thrown off on the roof
beside the said clinic. Two days after the incident, a bomb was found about 20
meters from the exploded area and was immediately diffused by the police. Please
continue to pray for our brethren in this area. -- Raymond C. Gapul, Youth
Member of Kidapawan City.
Bombings
in Zamboanga City
Pastor Nilo Belarmino, our pastor in Zamboanga City requests our prayers at this time when several bombs have exploded once again in the city of Zamboanga. Pastor Nilo is right now in San Pablo City to attend his mother's interment on October 19, 2002. Let's all remember Pastor Nilo and his family during this time of bereavement and also for our Zamboanga City brethren. --Len Joson
How We Resist Changing Our Worldview (From Thought-Provokers, Reviews You Can Use, August 1995)
"What happens when one has striven long and hard to develop a working view of the world, a seemingly useful, workable map, and then is confronted with new information suggesting that that view is wrong and the map needs to be largely redrawn? The painful effort required seems frightening, almost overwhelming. What we do more often than not, and usually unconsciously, is to ignore the new information. Often this act of ignoring is much more than passive. We may denounce the new information as false, dangerous, heretical, the work of the devil. We may actually crusade against it, and even attempt to manipulate the world so as to make it conform to our view of reality. Rather than try to change the map, an individual may try to destroy the new reality. Sadly, such a person may expend much more energy ultimately in defending an outmoded view of the world than would have been required to revise and correct it in the first place" (M. Scott Peck, The Road Less Taken [Touchstone Books, 1980], 45–6).
"Finally, brethren, pray for us, that the word of the Lord may have free course, and be glorified, even as it is with you." (2 Thessalonians 3:1)
