Free Medical Mission in Bicol
Legaspi
City -- To more than 800 residents of Tabaco City, coming from the poorest of
the poor in Barangays Mariroc, Pinagbobong, Magapo and Oson, January 20 &
21, 2007 shall long be remembered. Through the joint efforts of National
Director Eugene Guzon, the Texas Association of Filipino Physicians, and the
Philippine Nurses Association in America, a medical team conducted a medical
mission at Mariroc Elementary School in Tabaco City last weekend. It’s more
than a month now since super typhoon Reming left the whole province of Albay,
and the rest of Bicol region with so much devastation and an activity such as
this was heaven-sent indeed.
Three
doctors and five nurses, all Filipino-Americans were accompanied by ND Eugene
Guzon to Tabaco City morning of January 20. There the team was joined in by
twenty eight (28) volunteer student nurses from Bicol University Tabaco Campus (BUTC),
two doctors from the City Health Unit (CHU), personnel from the CHU, and
barangay health workers. The activity was facilitated by Drs. Joe & Virgie
Manzano, both professors of BUTC while Rex Olandesca acted as the overall
activity coordinator. A short program jump started the activity, which was
graced by Tabaco City Mayor Alex Burce.
During
the two day activity, the church also ministered to the people through feeding
and counseling. Board Member Ezra Raduban with Rex & Winnie Olandesca were
some of our pastors who counseled the patients. Tabaco City Church brethren also
served snacks to more than 800 persons morning until evening with goto, bread
and water in addition to all the staff and volunteers. Around 600 patients
benefited from free consultation, medicines and vitamins. Some 200 packs of
goods were also given to most needy patients.
After
the activity, Dr. Manzano turned over the tents used during the medical mission
to the principal of Mariroc Elementary School, who was very grateful to have
something to use as temporary roofing of their damaged classrooms. The foreign
team left for Manila afternoon of January 21 bringing with them pictures of the
grateful faces of the people whom God has blessed through their hands and
resources.
Together
with ND Eugene Guzon from the National office were Ptr. Rex de la Peña, Orly
Osillos, Bryan Meimban, Arnold Aquino and Jun Osillos.
Because
of the many patients who arrived, there was a need for a follow-up medical
mission which was conducted at the Barangay Hall of Mariroc, Tabaco City, Albay
on Wednesday, January 24, 2007. Two doctors from Tabaco City Health Office and
four volunteer Nursing students from Bicol University, Tabaco Campus attended to
more than 90 patients who were not accommodated last weekend. Additional
medicines were sent in by our National Office. The Barangay Health Workers and
Barangay Tanods were also there to help.
Juliana Bongalos, a barangay health worker of Mariroc said, “The counseling session had helped me a lot. I greatly benefited from it. My fears have diminished and my faith in God was strengthened. God indeed is the one who heals." --Myra Leslie Narido & Myrla Dawal

CWMC
for WCG-Baguio Fellowship
La
Trinidad, Benguet --- We may have a Filipino “diaspora” spread throughout
the nations of the earth, but does it have meaning and significance to the
Lord’s scheme of life in human history besides the search for cash and
livelihood?
Yes,
it does have great relevance and significance, says Pastor Rey Taniajura, WCG
area superintendent for Southern Tagalog and Bicol. He was in town on a retreat
course with other Christian pastors and to conduct a condensed world mission
course for the WCG fellowship here from January 18-22, 2007.
Nine
participated in the mission course. Five are new students, namely, Adel Areola,
Marion Domoguen, Paul Estong, Dario Ngoap and Glorial Pedro.
Where
does such vision lead us in the pursuit of the “Christian mission” to the
world? Back to the God! “Seek the Lord with all of your heart and get on with
a “heart-and-soul” relationship with him. It is here where the corporate and
individual Christian mission begins. Here, in his presence, is where human lives
in the Philippines and the nations in Asia can have meaning and significance,”
Pastor Rey said in a message to the Baguio City and La Trinidad congregation of
the WCG during their worship services last January 20 at the La Trinidad
International Baptist Church Hall.
Drawing
from the visions of several Christian pastors and leaders on the role of the
Philippines in world mission, Pastor Rey almost painted a vivid vision of a
Christian “diaspora” of Filipinos engaged in the discipling of peoples in
all the nations where they are working. He pointed out that “God gave
Filipinos, endowed with flexibility to various cultures, the title
“Christian.”
If
we live up to that title, the Philippines which sends out some 3,000 workers to
the outside world on a daily basis, can also fulfill its role in evangelizing
the people they come in contact with. A deeply committed Christian Filipino will
do what is necessary to accomplish his mission for God wherever he is and thus
bring world history closer to its destiny --- at the door step of heaven and
ultimately eternal life with God, he concluded.
Pastor
Rey was accompanied by his devoted and good wife, June to La Trinidad and the
city of pines. God bless the Philippines! –Robert L. Domoguen
