National Director Visits Brethren Affected by Flash Floods
Brother Ezra Raduban, a member of the WCG board and I arrived back from the trip to the disaster stricken area of Kalibo to personally supervise the relief distribution and to assess the needs for the losses of the other brethren. The area is still messy as the city residents are still salvaging what they can from the things that were buried in mud. There is still no electricity in many parts of the city as the electric poles that were felled by the typhoon still need to be fixed. There is still much dust and mud in the streets and prices of commodities have dramatically increased due to the emergency and since many of the stores lost their stocks to the flash floods recently.
However, all the brethren here are all accounted for. Despite scores of deaths in the city, our brethren are alive. While a few of our brethren lost their homes, and almost all lost 80 percent of their household belongings, they are all safe. I was listening to some of their testimonies last Sunday during an informal service held in one of the brethren's homes, one had to stay on a tree for 24 hours without food and water due to the sudden rise of the flood waters, until such time that one of their relatives saw her and swam towards her to bring her to safety. While they were doing that, and the current was so strong, they bumped into an electric post, and she lost grip of her relative, and our sister got bruised and was almost carried away by the strong current. But finally her relative got hold of her again and brought her to safety. While she almost got drowned and swallowed some muddy water, our sister did not get sick.
One orphan family lived in a house which they have evacuated due to the rising waters and the very strong wind, and after a few minutes, the huge tree beside their house fell directly to their house and toppled it to the ground. These children lost their mom to a car accident a few years ago, and they were also abandoned by their dad.
Even in this situation of adversity and crisis it is so heartwarming to hear how God delivered them, and how they were able to help each other. The brethren were really moved by the care that the WCG has given to them. They even commented that while there is some relief provided by the government, but it comes in trickles and due to the tremendous number of people, the goods run out before giving every one his small share. In the WCG, they did not have to fall in line, it was delivered in boxes to them during the meeting. The initial relief goods were processed and packed by our pastoral team members who live in Iloilo. The head of the pastoral team in Iloilo also met me in Kalibo. He drove starting about 2 in the morning, with his wife to bring the goods and meet us at around 8 in the morning on Sunday.
Since he is an engineer, Pastor Elmer also helped us assess what needs to be done and how we could help. Pastor Elmer and the pastoral team members in Kalibo, together with the members rode the truck and visited the brethrens' homes, especially those whose houses were destroyed to be able to encourage them and their relatives. Even the relatives who are not WCG members were really moved by the love displayed by the church.
The local church hall which is located in the place of one of our brethren, lost all its worship equipment and books, bibles, etc. The local area is praying for and seeking a place of higher elevation to move the church hall.
It is very hard to get some labor for carpentry and cleaning and clearing because most of the city residents are busy attending to their own homes, so we are trying to get carpenters and some volunteer help from Iloilo, a neighboring city which is about 5 hours away by land. We are looking also at the possibility of recruiting volunteers from friends of members in the city. Through the help that we got from the local churches in the Philippines, we already sent some relief goods and supplies, some of which were airlifted by one of our board members, Capt. Jessup Bahinting, using his private training plane since delivering some of the goods from the other islands is difficult.
With some supplemental help from the US brethren through the Disaster Fund, we have been able to stretch whatever contributions we received here for the calamity victims. The brethren feel blessed because they belong to a bigger WCG family. Since our brethren have received such wonderful support and has been taken care of, we are also now looking into the possibility of extending help to the affected communities as our funds and resources would permit. We praise God for all your support and prayers. It has made a big difference! --Eugene Guzon, National Director
Mindoro Brethren Visited After Typhoon Frank's Devastation
A day after typhoon Frank, I received a text message from a Mindoro member asking for assistance because their crops were damaged by the typhoon. Last July 3 and 4, I sent Pastor Pol Makahiya, who knows the area very well, to look at the condition of our Mindoro brothers and to bring some financial assistance as well.
Here is Pastor Pol's report: “Thank God, the weather is fine when I visited Mindoro. Also, thru the help of Ptr. Manny Cuizon and his motorcycle we were able to reach our destination safely and fast. I went there to bring some financial assistance as well as to give encouragement and prayers. The members in Bansud (Cuizon and Galit families) were surprised, elated and very glad to see us. Their palay and banana crops were damaged by the typhoon. In the course of our visit, we let the members pour out their thoughts, feelings and heartaches as we listened intently. Then we shared God’s word to them and prayed for them. They were in tears knowing that we love them and always include them in our prayers. They gratefully appreciated the assistance given to them by the Laguna members. One of the members said she’s been sick for 2 days and praying that God would help her pay her medicines which the Lord granted. They were also able to buy rice for their families. As she said, she was challenged by the message of God. Truly God makes all things work for good to those who love Him (Romans 8:28). We also visited the Cabuhat and Badilla families in Calapan City. Likewise, they appreciated our visit and financial assistance.
I left Mindoro satisfied knowing we ministered to the needs of the members physically and spiritually. To God be the Glory!" --Pastors Claro Ting and Apolonio Makahiya

Prayer Meetings Revived in Antipolo Church
The Antipolo brethren of the Worldwide Church of God are rededicating themselves to the Lord God Almighty with a Friday weekly prayer meeting beginning this Friday, July 11.
The congregation's weekly prayer meeting used to be on Wednesdays. It is being moved to Friday nights to enable more brethren, particularly the working ones, to spend time with one another in prayer and communion with God especially in the face of today's crises and conditions.
The prayer meeting will have four parts: worship, welcome, the reading of God's word, and works. This week's meeting will be led by Mrs. Glenda Gallo, and Mr. and Mrs. Rey Racho. --Jessica Baconawa
First VBS at Divine Grace Fellowship
The Divine Grace Fellowship held their first Vacation Bible School (VBS) graduation rites last 29 June at the Golden Meadows Clubhouse in Cordova, Cebu. Worship services was held in the morning which was attended not just by church members but also by invited guests and friends of church members. An extraordinarily sumptuous lunch was served after the service after which were parlor games with a lot of giveaways and prizes was held for all the kids who attended.
The ceremony proper was held in the afternoon and was participated in by all the VBS pupils from the pre-school to the early teen levels. During the program, the graduates from each level presented their VBS song interpretation and a monologue based on one VBS lesson. In additon, two of the graduates shared their testimonies as to how participating in the VBS has deepened their knowledge and relationships with GOD as well as other people.
After the program, the graduates and their family and friends spent the rest of the afternoon in fellowshipping and enjoying the food and treats of the event. To God be all the glory! --Vee S. Dequito
Speaking of Life Videos
Every week, Dr. Joseph Tkach presents relevant topics affecting life through a 3 or 4 minute video on the internet found in our WCG website. Pastors are highly encouraged to play these videos weekly as part of their local church worship services. A transcript is also available (in text format) for pastors to read during worship services. We have included it here as part of this Weekly Update.
Some local churches have found these videos very uplifting, and has kept them abreast of the current teachings of the WCG. For some, this is also their first time to see and hear Dr. Tkach and this has created a sense of the local church's being connected to the denomination's headquarters.
Below is the transcript of this week's Speaking of Life video:
SpOL-097 HOW GOD VIEWS US
Many Christians have a negative spiritual view of themselves. Because they are honest with themselves about their own sinfulness, they worry that they are unworthy of God’s love. They feel unacceptable and rejected.
And they feel that way even though none of those things are true. They might think that they’re unworthy of God’s love, but the truth is that God loves them every moment and his love for them never diminishes. They might think they are unacceptable and rejected, but the truth is that God has made them acceptable in Jesus Christ.
“Don't you know that all of us who were baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death?” wrote the apostle Paul in Romans 6. “We were therefore buried with him through baptism into death,” Paul continued, “in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead through the glory of the Father, we too may live a new life. If we have been united with him like this in his death, we will certainly also be united with him in his resurrection.” (Rom 6:3-5 NIV)
What greater assurance can we have of God’s acceptance and love than unity with Jesus Christ?
In Colossians 3:3-5, Paul wrote, “For you died, and your life is now hidden with Christ in God. When Christ, who is your life, appears, then you also will appear with him in glory.”
And in Romans 8:38-39 he wrote: “For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord.
When we believe God’s word about how he loves us and cares for us, we can live in the joy of that acceptance and belonging in Christ rather than living in fear, anxiety and insecurity.
God knows our sins, of course. He knows us inside and out even better than we know ourselves.
And yet God loves us anyway. We, on the other hand, tend to fear that God might not love us at all. But God simply does not evaluate us on whether we are “worthy” of his love. His love doesn’t have any strings attached – it does not depend on whether we are “worthy” of it. He simply loves us, whether or not we measure up to some standard.
Regardless of what we feel or believe about ourselves, we must never forget that God defines us as a new creation – and as wanted, included and loved in Jesus Christ.

Finally, brethren, pray for us, that the word of the Lord may have free course, and be glorified, even as it is with you." (2 Thessalonians 3:1)
