ND Eugene Teaches Evangelism for Military Nurses
![]() ND Eugene facilitates discussions with military nurses during a 3-day Haggai Leadership for Evangelism Seminar at V. Luna Medical Center. |
ND Eugene Guzon was among the faculty members who taught at the 3-day Haggai Leadership for Evangelism Seminar at the V. Luna Medical Center last Tuesday and Wednesday, July 29-30, 2008. The seminar was organized by the Haggai Alumni Association, and was hosted by Colonel Wilma Castillo, the chief Army Nurse at the said hospital.
ND Eugene facilitated discussions on Biblical Contemporary Models for Evangelism. These included the three sub topics on Motivating, Mobilizing and Training Leaders for Evangelism using the leadership principles of Jesus. Among his materials he also gave an overview of the “Small Groups” as a means of reaching new people with the gospel in a relational and non threatening environment.
Thirty eight (38) military nurses, from 2nd Lieutenants to a few colonels attended the seminar. These nurses work at the V. Luna Medical Center and some will be deployed in August to different military hospitals in Luzon shortly.
![]() ND Eugene poses with some of the military nurses during the Haggai training at the V. Luna Medical Center. |
He cited that perhaps the main objective of nurses is to extend professional care and compassion to wounded soldiers, with the desire for them to get well. He encouraged them to help the soldiers to live well too. That would come if these nurses and soldiers live purpose driven lives. He urged, the nurses to become contemporary nightingales and instruments of God in communicating the good news of salvation through Jesus. With that good news, soldiers or anyone who has embraced and believed this truth need not fear even death, but would live life with such optimism and courage.
Colonel Marivic Juan and Col Wilma Castillo gave ND Eugene a certificate of appreciation at the end of his talks. On his part, he also gave the graduates brand new Good News bibles. ND Eugene was requested to become a resource speaker for upcoming leadership training modules of the V. Luna Medical Center for Nurse Officers.
Please pray that this will be a continuing partnership between the church and the hospital, not only for medical missions in the future, but for promoting spiritual maturity and biblical community among the nurses and soldiers in the different hospitals in the country.
ND Eugene is scheduled to give another series on Evangelism next week, August 5 and 6, 2008 before Army officers at Fort Bonifacio in Taguig City. We also pray for the steady supply of good bibles that we can share the soldiers in the upcoming seminars. We also need your prayers so that we do some follow up for these participants after the seminars. There are about 120,000 active military professionals in the country. Please pray that more of these soldiers, nurses and military personnel can discover the amazing life that only Jesus Christ offers and we enjoin our pastors nationwide to get involved in reaching them in the different military camps nationwide.
ND Eugene Ordains Solomon Rosario as Elder at Palawan Visit
ND Eugene and Pastor Solomon cut the ribbon during the dedication of the renovated church facility. |
As part of his regular visits to the churches, ND Eugene flew to Palawan over the weekend, July 25-27, 2008. During his 3 days stay, he was able to visit some brethren in their homes, inspect the newly renovated day care center and church facility, spoke at two worship services and was able to have a meeting with the leaders in both Puerto Princesa City Church (Touch of Grace Fellowship) and Bahile outreach.
During the worship service in Puerto Princesa City, ND Eugene along with about 100 brethren dedicated the renovated church facility cum day care center for handicapped children. This center is home and school for about 30 handicapped children who are ministered to by about half a dozen church volunteers. Ptr. Solomon Rosario is the Executive Director while his wife Ofelia is the center manager. This center is being run by two registered social workers – Mr. Tirso Segundo who teaches social work at the local university. She is ably assisted by another registered social worker, Mrs Gilda U. Tadjurie.
ND Eugene ordains Pastor Solomon Rosario as an elder. Wife, Ofel and their two children join the ceremony. |
After the dedication of the building, ND Eugene also ordained pastoral team chairman, Pastor Solomon Rosario as elder. He called Pastor Solomon’s wife Ofel and children Solevan and Sean Oneil to the front and he prayed for them.
The festive mood at the worship service and depth of fellowship was evident. The worship team included children who performed special interpretative worship dances. The potluck lunch was more than enough for everyone. Several guests from other towns were also able to attend.
Right after the lunch, ND Eugene along with about 10 more brethren traveled for about one and a half hours to Bahile. The trip seemed short considering that one can only enjoy the fantastic landscape of sea and beautiful mountains along the way.
About 40 brethren and friends at Bahile gathered for the afternoon service. Mr. Jose Ustares Jr. was the worship leader. Several pastors from nearby Christian churches also attended the worship service and met ND Eugene afterwards.
This trip has shown once again, God’s mighty hand at work and the love and faithfulness of God’s people, led by the Holy Spirit as they minister to the needs of the brethren and the community in Palawan. This is a place where even handicapped children feel they are not alone because they are loved, accepted and included.
Kalibo Brethren Renovate Homes Bayanihan Style
One of the things that show when adversity comes is the love of the brethren expressed in many ways. It has shown when brethren gathered food, packed delivered food and other supplies for those who lost their homes and belongings during the latest Typhoon Frank.
The challenge of rebuilding was great. Carpenters were in short supply, prices of materials were not only scarce but costly. But it is amazing what the Holy Spirit can do when people commit themselves to God and to one another. It is always a beautiful sight when brethren can stop for a while from their routine chores and pool their strength and love for the sake of making a difference for someone else.
Adora is just one of our brethren who lost the roofing of their house and much of their household furniture, but she is also among those who have experienced the love of God during this time of adversity and loss. With the help of brethren overseas through the WCG Disaster Fund and supplies and skills from the brethren, she discovered that being part of a bigger family means something more than just fellowshipping at services. It was enjoying their warmth, energy, encouragement during this time of crisis.
Mrs. Fe Martinez, the pastoral team leader organized a work party to renovate the house. It was like watching an extreme makeover movie, where brethren, from all walks of life and different social status stood side by side, worked hand in hand, as they helped clean, wash soiled furniture, mixed concrete, put together coconut lumber beams and installed native shingles. The sight of the new roof and the renovated house was so pleasant, but nothing compares to the exciting feeling of cheer and gladness as brethren enjoyed working together to see that house livable again.
These past few days the reconstruction work continues. They are presently working on the other houses, including the house of the one orphan family which was completely destroyed. We are thankful to those who read this update, who were a part of the restoration work here in Kalibo through your prayers, your resources and energy. May God bless you richly.

Christ the Rock Fellowship Celebrates its 3rd Anniversary
Christ the Rock Fellowship, an outreach in Rizal, Laguna celebrated its 3rd anniversary last July 27. The celebration was held at D’Terrace Resort in Rizal. Close to one hundred members and guests attended the celebration.
It was originally planned that the event was for members of the outreach and neighboring WCG churches in Laguna. However, the outreach members decided to open the celebration to their relatives and friends who are non-WCG members. Of those who attended about a fourth were non-members.
The celebration became evangelistic as guests were introduced to the Christian faith through inspiring music and tambourine dances presented by the combined Sta.Lucia and Rizal music ministry groups. Powerful messages delivered by Pastors Tom Sotalbo, Claro Ting, and Dr.Rey Taniajura all focused on Jesus Christ and God's plan for the salvation of mankind. Teary eyes were seen among those who attended from the time of the opening prayer up to the closing part of the worship services.
An altar call was made by Ptr. Tom after the main message of Dr. Taniajura and from the response of the attendees; a number may have accepted Jesus Christ as their Lord and Savior after the prayer of Ptr. Tom.
Just before the worship ended, Ptr. Tom and his brother Moises were prayed over by Dr. Taniajura, as they were about to leave for New Zealand on July 31. While in New Zealand, Ptr. Tom plans to team up with a co-worker in a bee farm to do an outreach ministry among Filipinas who are married to New Zealanders. –Rinia Sotalbo.

Speaking of Life Videos
Every week, Dr. Joseph Tkach presents relevant topics affecting life through a 3 or 4 minute video on the internet found in our WCG website. Pastors are highly encouraged to play these videos weekly as part of their local church worship services. A transcript is also available (in text format) for pastors to read during worship services. We have included it here as part of this Weekly Update.
Some local churches have found these videos very uplifting, and has kept them abreast of the current teachings of the WCG. For some, this is also their first time to see and hear Dr. Tkach and this has created a sense of the local church's being connected to the denomination's headquarters.
Below is a transcript of this week's Speaking of Life video:
Speaking of Life 099: From God, By God and Through God
Dr. Joseph Tkach |
In Ephesians 2:8, the apostle Paul says, “it is by grace you have been saved, through faith...” He adds, “and this not from yourselves, it is the gift of God – not by works, so that no one can boast.”
During times of doubt or personal struggle with sin, it is comforting and reassuring to know that our salvation is not based on us, on how well we behave or how strong our faith is.
Our salvation is solely of God, by God and through God from beginning to end. When Paul wrote that “it is by grace you have been saved, through faith,” he does not mean the reverse, that it is by faith we are saved, through grace. Faith doesn’t save us, God does. And he does it by his grace, because HE is gracious.
Salvation isn’t something that can be earned. God gives it to us freely. Our part is simply to trust God who forgives us even though we don’t deserve it. That’s what faith is: trusting God to love us and save us in spite of ourselves. Faith is not a work that determines whether or not God will save us. God has already done that in Jesus.
Notice how Paul explains it in Romans 4:4-8:
“Now when a man works, his wages are not credited to him as a gift, but as an obligation. However, to the man who does not work but trusts God who justifies the wicked, his faith is credited as righteousness. David says the same thing when he speaks of the blessedness of the man to whom God credits righteousness apart from works: "Blessed are they whose transgressions are forgiven, whose sins are covered. Blessed is the man whose sin the Lord will never count against him.”
Faith does not cause God to save us. Faith simply involves trusting God and embracing the salvation that God has already, by his grace, made real for us in Jesus. Faith doesn’t cause salvation, or in any way bring about salvation. Faith only allows us to see what is already true in Christ.
“Blessed is the man whose sin the Lord will never count against him,” David said. That person is you. And your heavenly Father has made it so by Jesus Christ through the Holy Spirit.
I’m Joseph Tkach, speaking of LIFE.

They just fill me with great encouragement and inspiration reading How our HEAVENLY FATHER'S GREAT ALMIGHTY HAND WORKS!
